Barry Morentz:

Fun with Neuland

Neuland and Way Beyond

Bold. Graphic. Unapologetically powerful.

Rudolf Koch’s iconic Neuland may have been designed as a modern Blackletter typeface, but in your hands it becomes something far more expressive.

In this workshop, you’ll master the foundational all-caps alphabet — then push it.

Stretch it.

Exaggerate it.

Make it yours.

You’ll learn how to:

• Build strong, confident Neuland letterforms
• Manipulate proportion for drama or play
• Combine letters into striking monograms
• Transform those monograms into abstract, design-forward compositions
• Elevate everything with color and simple gilding techniques

The result? Letters that don’t just sit on the page — they command it.

Come ready to experiment. Leave with bold work that feels graphic, modern, and unmistakably you.

The Hand You’ll Learn From:

Barry Morentz works from his Manhattan studio creating calligraphic works, hand-made books, and lettered objects for institutions including The New York Public Library, The Museum of Modern Art, Cartier, and Columbia University. With a background in medieval history and decades of study under masters such as Sheila Waters and Gottfried Pott, his work is rooted in scholarship and alive with curiosity.

A gifted teacher and storyteller, Barry invites students to explore the emotional and visual power of letterforms, revealing layers of meaning that reward close attention and thoughtful making.

Best for:
Calligraphers who love history, illumination, and depth, students drawn to layered meaning in text, and artists who want their work to feel both intellectually rich and emotionally resonant.
